A Short History of
Haa Alif. Atholhu Madharusaa
The school, which had been administered in Hoarafushi under
variety of names, was named Haa Alif Atholhu Madharusaa on
24 July 1979 by the Ministry of Education. At that time the
school was run in a building which belonged to the citizens
of Hoarafushi.
Teaching was carried out “special classes were conducted”
without any trained teachers or any syllabus until 22 February
1981. When two trained teachers joined the school. As a result,
the foundation of primary education was laid and grade one
was formed on 22 February 1981. By the end of the year, there
were about 190 students, 2 trained teachers and 2 untrained
teachers in the school.
On 6 March 1984, the school was shifted to a new building,
which was built with the assistance of the Japanese Government.
The opening of the new building made it possible to solve
the problems caused by the lack of space and rooms. In the
same year, an assistant headmaster was appointed to administer
the school. After 3 years, in 1987, a headmaster was appointed
to run the school. In 1989, the first expatriate teacher joined
the school.
By 1994, there were 660 students and 31 teachers in the school.
In 1994, preliminary grade 8 was introduced in the school
to prepare the students for the entrance test of grade eight.
In 1996, grade 8 was formed, and the school acquired the full
range from grade 1 to 10.
For the first time, In 1999, 11 students from this school
sat the GCE Ordinary level examinations. Since the school
was not a centre for GCE ordinary level examinations, the
students had to go to the nearest centre, Haa Alif Atholhu
Thauleemee Markaz, which is in Dhidhdhoo. Out of these 11
students, 2 students were qualified for the GCE Advanced level
in Science Education Center in Male’. In 2000, the school
was recognized as a GCE Ordinary level Examination Centre.
In 2000, 3 students, and in 2001, 5 students became eligible
to study at the Centre for Higher Secondary Education. It
is remarkable that in 2001, a student from this school was
included amongst the “top 10 results at the GCE Ordinary
Level exam” of the Maldives. In 2001, two streams of
subjects, Commerce and Science were introduced in the school.
Mr. late Adam Saleem, Mr. Mohamed Mukhthar, Mr. Mohamed Naseer,
Mr. Fuwad Gasim, Mr. Ahmed Faisal, Nahida Ali, Mohamed Rasheed,
Mohamed Shafeeu and Mr. Abdulla saeed were in-charges of the
school over past 25 years. Their effort to promote and develop
the school in every aspect needs high appreciation.
At present we have a total of 957 students, and 73 members
of staff including 59 teachers. Apart from teaching, several
extra and co-curricular activities are also conducted in the
school. These include Scout, Girl Guide, Dhivehi & English
literary activities, environmental, health and religious clubs
and Quran recitation classes. The sports activities include
football, volleyball, netball, badminton, TT and athletics.
Parents of students, Parent Teacher Association (PTA) and
Past Pupils’ Association (PPA) help the school to organize
and administer the various activities. A disciplinary committee
has been set up to deal with disciplinary problems and take
measures to avoid misbehavior among the students.
According to our motto “DISCIPLINE - DETERMINE”-
the school satiate it in all activities. We determined to
get better result in grade eight Entrance exams and IGCSE,
CIE ordinary level examinations. We are on an eternal mission
to implement the school motto in letter and spirit in terms
of the quality of education and results at the international
