In a news conference held at the Fansavees Maalan of Dharubaaruge on Sunday, the 7th of June, Ministry of Education gave the details of the projects which are in progress under the Public Private Partnership policy.

Speaking to the media about the projects, Minister of Education Dr. Mustafa Lutfi said that a total of 4 schools have been chosen to be run under this program. According to the Minister two schools are from Male’ and two are from the atolls. The schools chosen from Male’ are Ghiyasuddin School which is a government school and Madhrasathul Ameer Ahmed which a ward school. Afeefudden School from Haa Dhaal Kulhudhuffushi and Muhibbuddin School from Seenu Atoll Hithadhoo were chosen from the atolls.

Speaking about this project, Minister said that “Today we should prepare the children to face the world”. He also said that to prepare children to face the world, they need to be given more opportunities than they are given at present. The Minister further said that when schools are run by parties who are experienced in running schools and universities, our children would get more opportunities to improve and polish their skills.

In giving details about the reasons for adopting such a policy, Minister Dr. Mustafa Lutfi said that at present, a number of parents spend a huge amount to go abroad to give a better education for their children and when schools of such level are operated in the country itself, this would make it easier for the parents. He also said that another reason was to create a wider range of opportunities for the students to learn new things. According to the Minister of Education, 19 parties, both local and foreign have expressed their interest in opening schools and educational institutions in Maldives and that at the beginning of the next academic year these schools would be operated under such partnerships.

Deputy Ministers of the Education Ministry Dr. Abdullah Nazeer, Mrs. Shifa Mohamed and the Director General at the Ministry of Education Mr. Ahmed Shafeeu also spoke at the news conference.
