Subject achievement target announced

In a media conference held at the Fansavees Maalam of Dharubaaruge, Minister of Education Dr. Mustafa Lutfi announced the Subject achievement target for the year 2010. The target for the year 2010 is for 41% of the students who sit for the Secondary School completion exams, to score passes in 5 subjects or more. This is a 9% increase of the score achieved in 2009. Minister also announced that his target is for students scoring “U” in the subjects to be decreased by 5% this year.

The education target of the government is for 60% of the students who sit for the Secondary School completion exams, to pass in 5 subjects or more. 32% of the students reached this level in 2009. This is 5% increase when compared to the previous year. In comparing the results of 2008 and 2009, an improvement is seen in the pass percentage of 14 subjects. It has also been noted that the students who sat for the Science stream subjects scored better than the Commerce stream subjects.

A total of 7137 students from 173 schools participated in the exams in 2009. This includes 5235 students from atoll schools and 1902 students from Male’ schools.
